CARLOS M. MONTES

CHICANO REBEL

Carlos M. Montes is a nationally respected leader in the Chicano, immigrant rights, and anti-war movements. In 1967, he was a co-founder of the Brown Berets, a Chicano working class organization in East Los Angeles, California. Montes was one of the leaders during the 1968 Chicano Student Blowouts, a series of walkouts from East Los Angeles high schools to protest against racism and inequality in Los Angeles-area high schools. He is portrayed by Fidel Gomez in the 2006 HBO movie Walkout. Montes is also one of the East LA 13 indicted by the LA Grand Jury for conspiracy to disrupt LAUSD schools.
